TOKYO (Reuters) - The Nikkei average slid 4.5 percent on Wednesday as fears about the global economy spooked investors into dumping stocks, while a firm yen dealt an added blow to exporters.

The benchmark Nikkei shed 460.78 points to 9,695.12. At one point it fell to its lowest level since November 2003.

The broader Topix lost 4.3 percent to 935.40.
