Brown says FSA looking at enhancing bank guarantee
LONDON (Reuters) - The financial services watchdog is looking at "further proposals" to enhance bank deposit guarantees, Prime Minister Gordon Brown said on Wednesday.
Brown's government recently introduced proposals to raise the bank deposit guarantee to 50,000 pounds from 35,000 per account.
"We said at the time we were prepared to look at any other proposals. Obviously we will see what comes up in the discussions today. The Financial Services Authority is at the moment looking at further proposals," he told a briefing before a European Union summit.
The European Commission adopted a proposal on Wednesday at the request of EU finance ministers to raise the minimum bank guarantee to 50,000 euros, rising to 100,000 euros at the end of 2009.
