VIENNA (Reuters) - European Central Bank Governing Council member Ewald Nowotny was in hospital on Saturday after a routine operation on Friday led to a minor complication, the medical chief of Vienna's Wilhelminen hospital said.

The complication was easily treatable and the hospital expected Nowotny to recover quickly, Wilhelminen hospital's Dr. Barbara Hoernlein said in a statement.

The statement gave no further details.

Nowotny, who is 64, assumed his position as governor of the Austrian central bank at the beginning of last month.
