LONDON (Reuters) - The government does not want to hold its stake in Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS.L) for very long, Prime Minister Gordon Brown said on Thursday.

"We don't want to own this for very long because we came in to stop the bank from collapsing entirely," Brown told the BBC. "What we're not trying to do is to interfere with its commercial decisions."

Britain bought a 58 percent stake in the bank last week after investors shunned a rescue plan.
