FACTBOX - Singer Little Boots tipped for the top in 2009
(Reuters) - The BBC has named Little Boots, aka Victoria Hesketh, as the winner of its "Sound of 2009" poll which canvases more than 130 music industry insiders who name their favourite three up-and-coming acts.
Last year singer Adele topped the league, and she has gone on to garner four Grammy nominations. Welsh singer Duffy, who came second in 2008, had the biggest selling album in Britain last year.
Following are the "Sound of 2009"'s top five, and the BBC's description of their style:
1. Little Boots
- Victoria Hesketh is a 24-year-old electro-pop singer from Blackpool "Like a British Kylie or a harder, shinier St Etienne, she plays catchy, credible futuristic pop."
2. White Lies
- London rock trio whose music is "doom-laden rock ... full of references to plane crashes, murders, funerals, kidnappings and nervous breakdowns."
3. Florence & the Machine
- London-based 22-year-old singer-songwriter. "Slightly bonkers singer-songwriters like Kate Bush, Bjork and PJ Harvey are not far-fetched comparisons." Continued...
