Pentagon calls Georgia mutiny an isolated incident

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Pentagon on Tuesday said a mutiny at a Georgia military base appeared to be an isolated incident but added that it was still monitoring the situation.

"It looks like a fairly isolated incident at this point," said Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman, adding that the rebellion appeared to have come to an end.

"This is a situation that just occurred and we're still assessing the situation but it doesn't change our long-term relationship with Georgia," he added.

Asked about Georgian claims of Russian involvement, Whitman said: "I don't' have any information on it."

The U.S. Defence Department, which ran a training program for the Georgia military before last August's war with Russia, now has fewer than two dozen personnel in the country, Whitman said.
