Lebanon PM Siniora wins seat in parliament
BEIRUT (Reuters) - Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora, a premier who has enjoyed western and Arab support, won a parliamentary seat in an election on Sunday, extending his political career as a member of an anti-Syrian coalition.
Running for parliament for the first time, Siniora won one of two seats reserved for Sunni Muslims in the southern city of Sidon. He was running as a member of Saad al-Hariri's Future Movement and defeated Oussama Saad, who was running as part of a pro-Syria alliance including Shi'ite faction Hezbollah.
Siniora, 66, has headed government since the Hariri-led "March 14" coalition won a parliamentary election in 2005, leading cabinet through 18 months of political conflict with Hezbollah and its allies. He is not seen retaining his post as prime minister.
