U.S. comes from behind to clinch semi-final berth
RUSTENBURG (Reuters) - The U.S. engineered a remarkable comeback Sunday to qualify for the Confederations Cup semi-finals after beating Egypt 3-0 in their Group B tie.
The Americans, who had lost their first two group matches, qualified on goals scored ahead of World Cup holders Italy, who crashed to a 3-0 defeat by group winners Brazil in Pretoria at the same time.
Charlie Davies scrambled in the first goal in the 21st minute but it was only after half-time that the U.S. realized they were in with a chance and set about adding two more from Michael Bradley and Clint Dempsey.
The U.S. now play Spain in the first semi-final in Bloemfontein Wednesday with South Africa up against Brazil in Johannesburg Thursday.
