Brown says currency debate is for long-term
L'AQUILA, Italy (Reuters) - Prime Minister Gordon Brown on Thursday said any discussion on alternative global reserve currencies was for the long-term, warning that debating it now risked destabilising currency markets.
"I don't want to give the impression that there is some major change about to happen around the corner," Brown told reporters at the Group of Eight leaders summit.
The comments come after China used the event to call for a reform of the global reserve currency system in one of its most direct attacks yet on the U.S. dollar's dominance in the global economy.
