LONDON (Reuters) - "Bruno," Sacha Baron Cohen's latest film about an outrageous gay Austrian fashion reporter, proved to be in vogue with British cinemagoers, romping to the top of the box office on Tuesday.

The "mockumentary," which features Cohen in his latest over-the-top guise seeking to expose bigotry through comedy, took just under 5 million pounds in its opening weekend, Screen International said.

The film, which follows the camp reporter's attempts to find fame in the United States, has also claimed top spot in the North American box office and in Australia.

Bruno's success pushed animated movie "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs," the third in the Ice Age series, down to second.

The movie, which centres around a lost world of dinosaurs under the ice and features the voices of Ray Romano and Queen Latifah, pulled in another 4.75 million pounds, taking its total UK earnings to more than 15 million pounds.

"Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" and booze-soaked lads' comedy "The Hangover" remained in third and fourth spots.

"Public Enemies," starring Johnny Depp as the 1930s gangster John Dillinger, fell to fifth with tear-jerker, "My Sister's Keeper," featuring Cameron Diaz and Alec Baldwin dropping to sixth.

Stone Age caper "Year One" with Jack Black and Michael Cera was down one in seventh while Ben Stiller's "Night at the Museum 2" stayed in eighth.

Two Bollywood movies made up the top ten, with comedy romance "Kambakkht Ishq" in ninth and "Shortkut," a comedy about two con artists, a new entry in tenth.
