"Fantastic" day for top amateur Mannasero, 16

TURNBERRY, Scotland (Reuters) - Sixteen-year-old Italian Matteo Manassero hailed his "fantastic day" after a level-par 70 effectively won him the silver medal as leading amateur in the British Open.

On a blustery, showery Friday at Turnberry's Ailsa Course, his one-over-par total of 141 meant he was the only amateur to make the cut.

"It is one of the greatest days of my life," Manassero told reporters.

"In this weather it was tough and it is amazing to make the cut in the Open. It has been a fantastic day."

Manassero will claim the silver medal providing he completes all four rounds.

The only other amateur in the field, German Stephan Gross, missed the cut by five shots on 149.

"I'll remember this day for a long time," Manassero added. "Hopefully I can continue to play well and have a great weekend."

Playing with Manassero was 59-year-old Tom Watson who shared the lead with fellow American Steve Marino on 135, five under.  Continued...
