FACTBOX - Security developments in Afghanistan

(Reuters) - Following are security developments in Afghanistan at 12:30 p.m. British time (1130 GMT) on Sunday:

* Denotes new or updated items.

* KANDAHAR - A civilian helicopter under contract for NATO forces in Afghanistan crashed at the military base of foreign troops in the south of the country Sunday, killing 16 people and wounding five others, the alliance said.

* NANGARHAR - A suicide bomber detonated explosives attached to his body at the gate of the main border crossing point into neighbouring Pakistan in Nangarhar province in the east of the country, killing three people including two Afghan police, the Interior Ministry said. Several others were wounded in the attack, it said.

* KANDAHAR - Afghan and foreign troops killed 35 insurgents in an operation in Kandahar province in the south of the country Saturday, the Afghan Defence Ministry said. It did not give further details or say whether there were any casualties among the troops.

* KUNDUZ - Gunmen killed a candidate for the provincial council for the northern city of Kunduz overnight, along with his driver, a spokesman for the election commission said.

SOUTHERN AFGHANISTAN - An Australian soldier from the NATO-led force was killed by a roadside bomb in the south of the country Saturday, the Australian Defence Department said. Another Australian soldier and three Afghan civilians were wounded.

KUNAR - A U.S. military helicopter made an emergency landing near a military base in the northeastern province of Kunar, the U.S. military said. There was no insurgent activity in the area at the time and those on board were taken to a medical facility for treatment, it said.
