(Reuters) - Britain's electricity is generated by a number of different sources, including coal, gas, and nuclear, with consumption expected to increase over the next few years.

Below are two lists covering the ratio of fuel types used to generate power and how much capacity is expected to come online by 2015/16.

The following lists the breakdown of the types of power generation in the first quarter 2009 and first quarter 2008.

During this period, total electricity supplied fell by 5.1 percent mainly due to the recession and coal overtook gas as the main fuel for power generation.

FIRST QUARTER 2009

Coal 38.1 percent

Gas 37.5 percent

Nuclear 15.6 percent
