STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - Michael Phelps reached the men's final in the 200 metres medley at a World Cup short course event on Wednesday but failed to progress in the 100 metres butterfly.

The American, who unlike most other swimmers has opted not to compete in the high-tech bodysuit which will be banned from January 1, clocked one minute 56.09 seconds to produce the second-best time in the morning heats, 0.1 seconds behind Swede Simon Sjodin.

Phelps, who made it into only one of three finals at Eriksdalsbadet on Tuesday, produced the 11th best time in the 100 metres butterfly, clocking 51.06.

The Stockholm meeting is the first short course event since 2006 for Phelps, who won eight Olympic golds last year and five golds at the world championships in Rome in July and August.
