Barclays nears deal for Lehman U.S. unit -source

LONDON, Sept 16 (Reuters) - British bank Barclays (BARC.L) is near to a deal to buy Lehman Brothers' LEH.N core U.S. broker-dealer business, a person familiar with the matter said, but said there could be no certainty a deal will be struck in the complex talks.

The source declined to comment on likely price or other details.

Barclays said on Tuesday it was in talks to buy some of Lehman's assets. Sources said the talks were over the core broker-dealer business, including equities, fixed income and other areas. [nWLA9611]
