TIMELINE - The Rachel Nickell case
LONDON (Reuters) - Colin Stagg, who was cleared of murdering model Rachel Nickell 16 years ago, has been awarded more than 700,000 pounds compensation for wrongful arrest and prosecution. Here are some key facts about the case, one of Britain's most notorious murders.
1992
-July: Nickell, 23, is sexually assaulted and stabbed 49 times on Wimbledon Common in southwest London while walking her dog with her two-year-old son Alex. A fellow walker finds Alex clinging to his mother's blood-soaked body.
1993
- August: Stagg, a 29-year-old unemployed man from Roehampton, is charged with Nickell's murder even though there is no forensic evidence linking him to the case.
1994
- Stagg is tried for murder but the case collapses on the grounds that police used a "honey trap" plot to encourage him to confess. An undercover policewoman contacted Stagg, posing as a friend of a woman that he used to be in contact with via a lonely hearts column and attempted to get information from him by feigning a romantic interest in him. The evidence is ruled inadmissible and the case thrown out.
2007
- January: Stagg is told by the Home Office he will be entitled to compensation. Continued...
