- Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili has inked a clause to the Medvedev-Sarkozy peace plan brought to him by a top-level European Union delegation, the paper reports. Tbilisi insists that international observers be deployed not only in the buffer zone separating rebel Abkhazia and South Ossetia from Georgia proper, but also in these unrecognised republics. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has contered that security in the breakaway regions can only be safeguarded by Russian peacekeepers.
- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev ordered on Tuesday to disband an Interior Ministry department fighting organised crime and terror. This service will now fight extremism and corruption.
