TABLE-US ethanol capacity tops 9.25 bln gallons per year

June 27 (Reuters) - U.S. ethanol capacity has risen 45 percent since June
2007 to more than 9.25 billion gallons per year as producers expect government
mandates and record oil prices to help open new markets for the alternative
fuel.

Six new plants opened this month though the timing for new ethanol capacity
could be better. Midwest flooding has inundated crop lands and spiked prices
for corn, the main feedstock for U.S. ethanol, to record prices above $8 a
bushel.

Producers took heart in new terminals opening to ease transportation of
ethanol to the U.S. Southeast. Late last year's U.S. energy law that mandated a
five-fold increase in blending of biofuels into gasoline to 36 billion gpy by
2022 also gave the industry confidence.

While some plants have opened, VeraSun (VSE.N: Quote, Profile, Research) and private company
Heartland Ethanol LLC have scrapped or delayed plans for 10 plants this month.

The United States boasted 160 distilleries on Friday with 43 plants under
construction and 7 undergoing expansion.

If all the new plants and expansions come on line total U.S. capacity would
be about 13.6 billion gpy.
