Rugby-Rampant Wallabies expose French system with big wins
BRISBANE, July 6 (Reuters) - The physical toll of France's "53-week" season was brutally exposed over the past fortnight as a rampant Wallabies outscored the visitors 74-23 in a one-sided test series.
After Australia wrapped up the two-test set with an emphatic 40-10 win in Brisbane on Saturday, following on from a 34-13 win in Sydney a week earlier, French coach Marc Lievremont lamented the poor physical state of his touring party.
"What was shown was the limits of the French system, a 53-week season really isn't possible," Lievremont told reporters.
The French arrived in Australia missing a string of first choice players who were still involved with club commitments back home, forcing Lievremont to select a largely inexperienced squad.
Heading into the series, Lievremont was confident the youngsters -- alongside a few older heads such as Sebastien Chabal and Dmitri Yachvili - would be able to match the Wallabies.
However, after a second heavy defeat in succession he conceded his side had been comprehensively outplayed.
"Our young players were courageous but that wasn't enough," he said.
"We prepared for this game thinking we could win but the Australian team made us face reality.
"It's hard to be happy after losing by 30 points but there is still some satisfaction. Some individuals did well. Continued...
