Scotland restore pride by beating England

EDINBURGH (Reuters) - Master place-kicker Chris Paterson put over four penalties as Scotland upset England 15-9 in a poor Six Nations match on Saturday, relegating Jonny Wilkinson's new world points record of 1099 to second place.
The Scots, thanks to magnificent defence, deserved their first victory of the tournament that ended England's lingering hopes of fighting for the title on the final weekend next Saturday.
Scotland, with only their third test win over England in 19 but their second in a row at Murrayfield, had the visiting side on the back foot for the opening quarter with Paterson putting them ahead with his first penalty.
Midway through the half, England fullback Iain Balshaw chased his own kick ahead down the right wing with Scotland's Rory Lamont chasing across to intercept in a move that nearly produced a try.
The ball ran loose after the two players collided and it took a tackle by flanker Allister Hogg to prevent centre Jamie Noon from going over in the corner.
However, play was held up for more than eight minutes because Balshaw had caught the side of Lamont's head with his knee and the wing needed treatment on the pitch before being carried off on a stretcher.
The incident did not dent Scotland's resolve, though, and the organisers announced at halftime that Lamont had been taken to hospital where he was recovering and in a stable condition.
Dan Parks came on as the replacement but went to his favoured flyhalf position with Paterson reverting to his World Cup role on the wing. Continued...
