What they said about the results
LONDON (Reuters) - Here is a selection of reactions to the local elections.
DAVID CAMERON, CONSERVATIVE PARTY LEADER
"I think this is a very big moment for the Conservative Party, but I don't want anyone to think that we would deserve to win an election just on the back of a failing Government.
"I think these results are not just a vote against Gordon Brown and his Government. I think they are a vote of positive confidence in the Conservative Party."
HARRIET HARMAN, LABOUR PARTY DEPUTY LEADER
"These are disappointing results and we recognise the difficult economic context with people feeling the pinch.
"We are determined to listen and are confident to take the country forward."
On the increased share of the Conservative vote: "What it will do is make people look at what the Tories are actually offering. What is their alternative? I think they haven't come under serious scrutiny."
