LONDON The heads of the two main political parties were bested by Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegge in the first leaders' debate on Thursday, according to instant polls taken after the 90-minute televised event.
A YouGov poll for the Sun newspaper put Clegg on 51 percent ahead of Conservative leader David Cameron at 29 percent and Labour Prime Minister Gordon Brown on 19 percent.
A separate ComRes/ITV poll showed 43 percent thought Clegg was the winner while 26 percent backed Cameron. Brown came out last again at 20 percent.
