STATION DES ROUSSES, France (Reuters) - Statistic, quote and fact of the day after the eighth stage of the Tour de France, a 187.5-km ride from Dole on Saturday.

STATISTIC OF THE DAY: It is the first time since 2009 that two different French riders have won a stage in the opening eight days of the Tour de France. Lilian Calmejane won on Saturday after Arnaud Demare got the stage win on Tuesday.

QUOTE OF THE DAY: “Went in a little hot. I had a choice between going into trees or a hay bale. I went with the hay bale” - Britain’s Geraint Thomas explaining his crash after going off the road in a descent.

FACT OF THE DAY: French champion Arnaud Demare’s hopes of winning the green jersey for the points classification suffered a blow when he was dropped early in the stage and was unable to contest the intermediate sprint. German Marcel Kittel took third place to pick up 15 points and extend his lead to 30 points.
