Forward Robert Acquafresca converted a generous penalty in the 18th minute to give basement side Cagliari their fourth win in six games. Atalanta struggled to react after falling behind and had defender Moris Carrozzieri sent off for a second yellow card in the 76th.

A second-half shot from Siena striker Massimo Maccarone that hit the crossbar was the highlight of an uneventful match.
