Brussels
Brussels – Overview
A major centre of business and government, Brussels has three roles: the capital of Belgium (the Old Town financial district and Belgian parliament); headquarters of the EU (to the east, clustered around the Rond-Pont Schuman and the Place de Luxembourg); and the European base for many international corporations (some 1,200 from the United States), many of which have headquarters on the highways leading out to the airport.
The home of some 300,000 expats, this buzzing aristocratic city is arguably the most cosmopolitan on the continent. To get your bearings, walk from the Palais Royal, along the Rue Royale, through the Place du Grand Sablon, and down to the Grand Place in less than an hour. Don’t leave without sampling the wonderful chocolate: don’t worry; there are chocolatiers everywhere.
Money: Euro (€).
Euro-denominated credit cards are widely accepted in main hotels, shops and restaurants; travellers’ cheques are also often accepted. Smaller establishments may accept cash only.
