Paris
Paris – Overview
No matter how international Paris becomes, it remains very, very charismatically French. Wine with lunch? Bien sûr! Feeling underdressed? That’s understandable when every passer-by looks as if they were costumed by a couturier. Visiting in Summer? Forget it – all the serious work in the French capital seems to get done in the autumn and winter months.
On one hand an untainted collection of cobbled lanes, rustic street-side cafés and neo-classical stone residences; on the other, an international financial centre, hosting at the last count 27 of the Fortune 500 companies, Paris is divided into 20 districts (arrondissements; the last two digits of a postcode indicates the arrondissement). The Seine divides the city into the Right Bank (Rive Droite) and the Left Bank (Rive Gauche). Business-class hotels are mostly located in the centre on either bank of the river. Some businesses are in the centre, and many others in the modern north-western La Défense district.
Money: The Euro (€). Euro-denominated traveller’s cheques and credit cards are widely accepted in main hotels, shops and restaurants. Smaller establishments may accept cash only.
