    Zurich – Overview

Do not labour under the misapprehension that Zurich, Switzerland’s largest city, is simply a sterile banking hub. Yes, it is the country’s economic capital and home to one of the largest stock exchanges in the world – but, get under the clean, efficient surface of this picturesque but expensive city of 380,500 people, and you’ll find a surprisingly vibrant edge.

Get your bearings with a boat cruise on the waters of Lake Zurich (the town sits at its northern tip), or the River Limmat; most major businesses, shops, restaurants, nightclubs and hotels are situated within two miles of either side of the river. The local café society can be found in the labyrinth of lanes in the cobbled riverside old town: perfect for a slow meander.

For those who like to blend work and pleasure, Zurich is well placed for skiers. From the 871-metre (2,857 ft) Uetliberg mountain — easily reached by train — stop to admire the breathtaking panorama of city and lake against the surrounding snow-capped peaks.

    -Money: Swiss Franc (CHF; SFr)

    Notes are in denominations of SFr 1,000, 200, 100, 50, 20 and 10. Coins are in denominations of SFr 5, 2 and 1, and 50, 20, 10 and 5 centimes.

American Express, Diners Club, MasterCard and Visa are widely accepted. ATMs are widely available.
