Name Description

Kenneth Marende

Hon. Kenneth Otiato Marende, EGH, has served as Non-Executive Chairman of the Board of The Kenya Power and Lighting Company Limited since January 5, 2015. He served as Non-Executive Director of the Company between December 19, 2014 and January 5, 2015. He is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with over 35 years standing. He is a former President of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) and a former Speaker of the Kenya National Assembly as well as Chairman of the Parliamentary Service Commission. Hon. Marende holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Law from the University of Nairobi and a Post Graduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law. He was awarded a Doctor of Legal Letters Degree by Maseno University in 2011 and an Honorary Doctor of Philosophy of Humanities Degree by United Graduate College, USA, in July 2010. Hon. Marende is also a director of Kenmar Limited. He is a Member by invitation of the Audit Committee, Member by invitation of the Staff and Remuneration Committee, Member by invitation of the Procurement Oversight Committee, and Member by invitation of the Power Purchase Agreements Committee of the Company.

Ben Chumo

Dr. Ben K. Chumo, OGW, has served as Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer, Executive Director of The Kenya Power and Lighting Company Limited since January 7, 2014. He served as Acting Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer, Executive Director of the Company between July 1, 2013 and January 7, 2014. He was Chief Manager, Human Resources and Administration of the Company between 2003 and July 1, 2013. He joined the Company in July 1986. He holds a Bachelor of Arts, Doctorate in Philosophy and Master of Business Administration degrees. Dr. Chumo has wide hands on experience in the sector, having risen through the ranks in the Company to his current position. Mr. Henry K. Rotich serves as Cabinet Secretary, The National Treasury of The Kenya Power and Lighting Company Limited. He holds a Master’s Degree in Economics and a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics (First Class Honors), both from University of Nairobi. He also holds a Masters of Public Administration (MPA) from Harvard University. Prior to this appointment, Mr. Rotich was the head of Macroeconomics at the Treasury, Ministry of Finance, since March 2006. Under this capacity, he was involved in formulation of macroeconomic policies that ensured an affordable and sustainable path of public spending aimed at achieving the Government’s development priorities. Prior to joining the Ministry of Finance, Mr. Rotich worked at the Research Department of the Central Bank of Kenya since 1994. Between 2001 and 2004, he was attached to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) local office in Nairobi to work as an economist.

Mr. Adil Arshed Khawaja has served as Non-Executive Director of The Kenya Power and Lighting Company Limited since December 19, 2014. He is a specialist in commercial law, corporate law, real estate law, energy, oil and gas, commercial litigation and arbitration. He has over 20 years of litigation and dispute resolution experience and vast experience in land and planning law. He has over 20 years experience in investment banking and fund management. Eng. Joseph K. Njoroge has served as Non-Executive Director of The Kenya Power and Lighting Company Limited since August 2, 2013. He was Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer, Executive Director of the Company from June 2007 to June 30, 2013. He was Non-Executive Director of the Company until June 2007. He is the Principal Secretary, Ministry of Energy & Petroleum. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and Master of Business Administration with a major in Strategic Management. He has experience in power engineering and management. He joined the Company in 1980 and rose through the ranks to become Managing Director in June 2007. He is a Chartered Electrical Engineer, Member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, UK, a Registered Consulting Engineer, and is also a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers of Kenya. He was Member of the Audit Committee and Member of the Staff and Remuneration Committee of the Company until June 30, 2013.
