Name Description

Kenneth Marende

Hon. Kenneth Otiato Marende, EGH, has served as Non-Executive Chairman of The Kenya Power and Lighting Company Limited since January 5, 2015. He served as Non-Executive Director of the Company between December 19, 2014 and January 5, 2015. He is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with over 35 years standing. He is a former President of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) and a former Speaker of the Kenya National Assembly as well as Chairman of the Parliamentary Service Commission. Hon. Marende holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Law from the University of Nairobi and a Post Graduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law. He was awarded a Doctor of Legal Letters Degree by Maseno University in 2011 and an Honorary Doctor of Philosophy of Humanities Degree by United Graduate College, USA, in July 2010. Hon. Marende is also a director of Kenmar Limited.

Kenneth Tarus

Dr. Kenneth (Ken) Tarus has served as Acting Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of The Kenya Power and Lighting Company Limited since January 4, 2017. He served as General Manager, Finance of the Company until January 4, 2017. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce and Master of Business Administration degree. He is Certified Public Accountant of Kenya. He brings with him over 20 years’ corporate leadership and management experience, five of which are in the energy sector. Previously, Dr. Tarus worked at the Rural Electrification Authority as head of Finance between 2012 and 2014 prior to which he was the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Finance, Planning and Administration at KCA University. He has held various leadership roles in the local banking sector as Head of Finance, IT and Administration at Bank of Africa, Financial Controller at Standard Chartered Bank and diverse positions at Kenya Commercial Bank. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Business Administration (Finance) from Kabarak University, an MBA from the University of Nairobi and a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from the same institution. Dr. Tarus is a Certified Public Accountant and a member of the Kenya Institute of Management.

Dr. Jeremiah Kiplagat serves as Director, Kenya Power International Ltd within The Kenya Power and Lighting Company Limited. He holds a Doctorate in Philosophy degree in Engineering, a Master of Science degree, and a Bachelor of Science degree.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics and has experience in private sector management. He is currently in horticulture business, prior to which he worked as Sales Manager with the United Distributing Company Ltd., and with the Nation Media Group. Adil Khawaja

Mr. Adil Arshed Khawaja has served as Non-Executive Director of The Kenya Power and Lighting Company Limited since December 19, 2014. He is a specialist in commercial law, corporate law, real estate law, energy, oil and gas, commercial litigation and arbitration. He has over 20 years of litigation and dispute resolution experience and vast experience in land and planning law. He has dealt with complex and control issues in Kenya and undertaken corporate restructuring; mergers and acquisitions; schemes of arrangement for banks and other companies; bank securities work and regulatory work. Mr. Khawaja holds a Bachelor of Law Degree from University of Sheffield and is an advocate of high court of Kenya. He holds a degree in Law from Kenya School of Law. He is also a director of Kenya Commercial Bank Limited and several other private companies. He has been Chairman of the Strategy and Customer Service Committee and Member of the ICT and Power Purchase Agreement Committee of the Company since January 2015.

Wilson Mugung'ei

Mr. Wilson Kimutai Mugung'ei has served as Non-Executive Director of The Kenya Power and Lighting Company Limited since December 19, 2014. He has over 20 years experience in investment banking and fund management. He has progressive experience in investment environments and in various capacities notably operations management and as a dealer. He holds Bachelor of Arts (Mathematics) from Kenyatta University and is undertaking a Masters degree in Business Administration. Mrs. Jane Apetet Nashida has served as Non-Executive Director of The Kenya Power and Lighting Company Limited since December 19, 2012. She has training in accounting, and religious studies and philosophy. She holds Bachelor of Arts degree in Development Studies. She has worked with the Constituency Development Fund and Finnish Free Foreign Mission. Previously, she worked with the Parliamentary Service Commission Constituency Office, Turkana, and the Full Gospel Development Project. She is Board Member of Uhuru High School in Lokichar, Turkana County. Joseph Njoroge

Dr. Eng. Joseph K. Njoroge, CBS, has served as Non-Executive Director of The Kenya Power and Lighting Company Limited since August 2, 2013. He was Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer, Executive Director of the Company from June 2007 to June 30, 2013. He was Non-Executive Director of the Company until June 2007. He is the Principal Secretary, Ministry of Energy & Petroleum. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and Master of Business Administration with a major in Strategic Management. He has experience in power engineering and management. He joined the Company in 1980 and rose through the ranks to become Managing Director in June 2007. He is a Chartered Electrical Engineer, Member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, UK, a Registered Consulting Engineer, and is also a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers of Kenya. He was Member of the Audit Committee and Member of the Staff and Remuneration Committee of the Company until June 30, 2013.

Henry Rotich

Mr. Henry K. Rotich, EGH, serves as Non-Executive Director of The Kenya Power and Lighting Company Limited. He is Cabinet Secretary, The National Treasury. He holds a Master’s Degree in Economics and a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics (First Class Honors), both from University of Nairobi. He also holds a Masters of Public Administration (MPA) from Harvard University. Prior to this appointment, Mr. Rotich was the head of Macroeconomics at the Treasury, Ministry of Finance, since March 2006. Under this capacity, he was involved in formulation of macroeconomic policies that ensured an affordable and sustainable path of public spending aimed at achieving the Government’s development priorities. Prior to joining the Ministry of Finance, Mr. Rotich worked at the Research Department of the Central Bank of Kenya since 1994. Between 2001 and 2004, he was attached to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) local office in Nairobi to work as an economist.
