The Organic and Inorganic Chemicals segment manufactures and sells polyvinyl chloride (PVC), silicones, methanol, chloromethane, cellulose derivatives, povals, caustic soda and silicon metals. The Electronic Materials segment manufactures and sells semiconductor silicon, organic materials and rare earth magnets for the electronics industry, as well as photoresist products. The Functional Materials and Others segment manufactures and sells synthetic quartz, rare earth and rare earth magnets for general use, as well as exports technology and plants and exports and imports other goods. This segment is also involved in the provision of construction, plant engineering and information processing services.

BRIEF: For the six months ended 30 September 2009, Shin-Etsu Chemical Co., Ltd.'s revenues decreased 40% to Y417.23B. Net income decreased 65% to Y35.53B. Revenues reflect lower sales especially from organic & inorganic chemicals and electronics business segments. Net income also suffers from lower gross margin and operating margin, lower interest income, lower equity gain as well as higher foreign exchange losses.
