Alpha Natural Resources, Inc. is an Appalachian coal supplier. The Company produces, processes and sells steam and metallurgical coal from eight regional business units, which, as of December 31, 2008, were supported by 34 active underground mines, 27 active surface mines and 11 preparation plants located throughout Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania, as well as a road construction business in West Virginia and Virginia that recovers coal. The Company is also involved in the purchase and resale of coal mined by others. On September 26, 2008, the Company sold its interest in Gallatin Materials LLC (Gallatin), a start-up lime manufacturing business in Verona, Kentucky. In July 2009, Alpha Natural Resources, Inc. and Foundation Coal Holdings, Inc. completed their merger. The new company will retain the name Alpha Natural Resources, Inc.

BRIEF: For the six months ended 30 June 2009, Alpha Natural Resources, Inc.'s revenues decreased 27% to $872.9M. Net income from continuing operations decreased 36% to $63.3M. Revenues reflect a decrease in coal revenue and lower freight & handling revenues. Net income also reflects an increase in cost of other revenue, a rise in selling general & administrative expenses and lower income from increase in fair value of derivative instrument.
