Factbox: Behind the BAFTA mask

Greek design

The famous BAFTA trophies are made at the New Pro Foundries in West Drayton, Middlesex. Designed by the late U.S. sculptor Mitzi Cunliffe, they are based on the theatrical masks of ancient Greece.

Pre-casting

Sand is poured over a mask template encased in a special box ahead of the casting process.

Action!

Workers pour molten bronze alloy into a cast. The metal is melted in furnaces where temperatures reach more than 1,000 degrees Celsius (1,800 Fahrenheit).

It's a wrap

A newly-cast BAFTA mask is taken out of the mould to start the finishing process.

Clutch of awards

A pile of masks awaits final preparation. They will be sanded, polished and mounted on a granite base.

In make-up

The mask's rough edges are ground off using a powerful belt sander.

And the winner is...

The finished masks are stored at BAFTA headquarters in London ahead of Sunday's ceremony.
