Russian protesters storm meeting

May 21 - Protesters in Russia's Pikalyova angry about living without gas burst into a meeting at the mayor's office.

Basmah Fahim reports.

SOUNDBITE: (Russian) UNIDENTIFIED PROTESTER SAYING:
"We are young, we can work, we want to work. Our children are hungry. Look at me, I am 25, I have a child, I want to work, I want to feed my child properly, I want him to eat well, and he doesn't, he can't."Attempting to calm the crowd the mayor said he's dealing with the matter.

  • (Russian) PIKALYOVA MAYOR, SERGEI WEBER, SAYING:
    "We have prepared an appeal to the St. Petersburg authorities to turn on the gas, in the present circumstances, to supply the town. And we'll sort out the issue of the central heating system, so the town can have hot water up to the end of the heating season."
