July 13 - The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee on Monday began a public confirmation hearing for Sonia Sotomayor for a seat on the U.S. Supreme Court, which would make her the high court's first Hispanic justice.
Sotomayor was nominated by President Barack Obama to replace Justice David Souter, who recently retired. He was among four liberals on the ideologically divided, nine-member court.
