Iraqis mourn after violent Thursday

(01:42) Rough Cut

Mar. 30 - Iraqis bury their dead on the morning after one of the bloodiest days in months.

Nearly 130 people were killed on Thursday (March 29) when two suicide bombers wearing vests packed with explosives killed 76 people in a market in a Shi'ite district in northern Baghad and, almost simultaneously, three suicide car bombers killed 53 people in Khalis, a mainly Shi'ite town north of Baghdad.

The upsurge in sectarian violence threatens all-out civil war and Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, a Shi'ite, called for restraint and urged Iraqis to work with security forces to prevent the violence spiralling out of control. Bombs earlier this week in northern Iraq sparked mass reprisal killings.

There has been a spike in bloodshed, particularly outside the Iraqi capital, in recent days, after a relative lull. Violence between majority Shi'ites and minority Sunnis has killed tens of thousands in the past year.
