Jul. 19 - Kurdish TV shows pictures of smoke rising from hillsides and people leaving villages following reports that the Turkish army has shelled Kurdish rebel targets in northern Iraq.
Turkey's army has been shelling Kurdish rebel targets just inside the border of northern Iraq, according to Kurdish officials.
Jabar Yawer, deputy minister for security forces in Iraq's Kurdistan, said about 100 shells were fired around the town of Zakho in northern Iraq. According to Yawer, no one was hurt but many residents were forced to flee.
Turkey, which never comments on reports it has carried out such military action, accuses militants of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) of using bases in the mountains of northern Iraq to strike at its forces.
