Annan seeks to end Kenya crisis

(01:59) Report

Jan. 11 - Kenya's opposition has called three days of nationwide protests next week after collapse of mediation efforts to resolve the post-election crisis.

Raila Odinga's Orange Democratic Movement said protests would be held in nearly 30 places around Kenya. The government has said it will not allow more protests, and police in riot gear patrolled parts of the capital on Friday. Previous rallies have led to riots and bloody clashes between Odinga's supporters and the security forces. More than 500 people have been killed in bloodshed since the elections, which Kenya's opposition say were rigged and which international observers say fell short of democratic standards. Former U.N. head Kofi Annan is to lead a group of eminent Africans in a new push to resolve the crisis.
