(01:02) Rough Cut

Jan. 18 - Former world chess champion Bobby Fischer has died of an unspecified illness, Iceland national radio reported on Friday.

The American-born Fischer, who beat Russian Boris Spassky in 1972 to become world champion in a widely followed match-up with Cold War overtones, was considered by some chess experts to be the greatest player of all time.

Fischer settled in Iceland in 2005 and was later granted Icelandic citizenship.
