Gazprom cuts gas supply to Ukraine

(02:30) Report

Mar. 3 - Russia's gas monopoly Gazprom reduces supplies to Ukraine by a third over a pricing dispute, just hours after Dmitry Medvedev wins Russia's presidential election.

Ukraine's state energy firm, Naftogaz, says the reduction is not significant and will not have an impact on consumers in Ukraine. A Gazprom spokesperson said deliveries had been reduced by 46 million cubic meters per day but Ukraine's state energy firm, Naftogaz, said that supplies had been reduced by 30 mcm a day.

Stefanie McIntyre reports.

SOUNDBITE:

  • Sergei Kupriyanov, Gazprom spokesman, saying (Russian):
"Gazprom is a reliable gas supplier, but we cannot and won't supply gas without payment. At the moment the Ukraine's gas debt question remains unresolved, this concerns gas which has already been supplied. There are no agreements signed, and up to this moment and without an agreement signed, we have supplied 1 billion and 900 million cubic meters of Russian gas to the Ukraine."
