Apr 9 - More than 1,000 flights were canceled by American Airlines as the carrier conducted mandated safety inspections of its MD-80 aircraft.
Wednesday's cancellations at American will likely cost the airlines tens of millions of dollars -- a financial hit to the carrier and a major headache for infuriated passengers.
