U.S. relief finally heads to Myanmar

(01:01) Rough Cut

May 12 - Nine days after cyclone Nargis hit, the U.S. has been granted permission by the military junta to deliver relief supplies to Myanmar.

A C-130 military transport plane left Thailand's Vietnam War-era U-Tapao airbase carrying water, mosquito nets and blankets. U.S. aid officials said they hope it will be the first of many U.S. flights to the army-ruled former Burma.

SOUNDBITE: UNITED STATES AMBASSADOR TO THAILAND, ERIC G. JOHN, SAYING: "More has to get in to Burma. More has to reach the areas that had been hardest hit, by this cataclysm. In addition to supplies, it is critical that our Disaster Response specialists be allowed into Burma to help those struggling with massive devastation that confronts them."
