Thai protests spark fears of coup

May 31 - Thousands of anti-government demonstrators have taken to the streets of the capital Bangkok in the latest of a series of protests.

Concern is growing that the social unrest may encourage the military to stage another coup. Thai Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej had threatened police action to clear the streets. But police appear to have backed away from carrying out the PM's threats for now.
