Tough terrain for Olympic torch

Jun 17 - Tight security surrounded the Olympic torch as it made its way through China's sensitive Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region.

Crowds lined the roads as torch bearers ran with the flame through Urumqi, the capital of the far northwestern province.

It is home to 13 different ethnic minorities, including the ethnic Muslim Uighurs.

The desert region is home to eight million ethnic Uighurs, a Central Asian people who speak a Turkic language and whom China blames for a series of attacks in the name of agitating for an independent state of East Turkestan.
