Aug 25 - Russian lawmakers call on their president to recognise Georgia's two breakaway regions as independent states.
It's a move certain to further strain Moscow's relations with the West. Members of both houses of Russia's parliament backed the independence resolution in unanimous votes.
Georgians struggling to get on with lives shattered by the brief conflict between Tbilisi and Moscow denounced the move as provocative and irrelevant in the face of international recognition of Georgia's territorial integrity.
