Ike batters Cuba

(02:00) Report

Sep 8 - Huricane Ike is pounding Cuba with 120 mph (195 kph) winds.

The Category 3 storm slammed into the north-eastern coast, where torrential rain and massive waves battered coastal towns.

Ike had earlier ripped through the Turks and Caicos islands as a category 4 hurricane, damaging 80 percent of homes on Grand Turk before rolling over the southern Bahamas.

It dumped more heavy rain on flood-hit Haiti, killing dozens of people.

The fourth major storm to rampage across the Caribbean in as many weeks is expected to slash through the heart of Cuba before heading across the Gulf of Mexico toward the United States.

Helen Long reports.
