Shoe scan security boost

(01:42) Report

Oct 13 - An Israeli firm develops a step-on scanner that saves airline passengers having to remove their shoes for security checks.

The scanner is used in conjunction with existing airport security checks to spot weapons or suspicious metal components concealed in footwear and an explosives-sniffing version is now being developed.

The current version costs around 5, 000 dollars. The equipment is already being used in almost 20 countries around the world and is being assessed by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration.

Paul Chapman reports.
