Oct 24 - Britain's economy has shrunk by half a per cent in the third quarter of 2008.
The Office for National Statistics says the 0.5 per cent drop in gross domestic product in the three months to September was the biggest since 1990 and the first contraction since 1992, further fuelling predictions of a long and painful recession.
