Fears grow for Congo's gorillas

(01:50) Report

Nov 13 - DR Congo's rare mountain gorillas have become the latest victim of the current fighting in the east of the country.

Rangers who protect the gorillas have fled increased fighting in the region and are now living in makeshift camps with their families. The conflict has displaced hundreds of thousands of people in the DR Congo's North Kivu province, home to Virunga Park, Africa's oldest national park.

Virunga's Gorilla Sector has been in the hands of rebel General Laurent Nkunda's fighters since September 2007 and the Rumangabo park headquarters, from which conservation operations were run, fell to a rebel assault in October this year.
