Jobless claims were down slightly last week, but continued claims hit a 26-year high, according to the Labor Department. AT&T and DuPont announced job cut plans as demand slows. Merck lowered 2009 expectations. Wal-Mart topped sales for November, but many of its peers were not as fortunate. Conway Gittens reports from New York.
