Jan. 6 - In his final days as President of the U.S. Senate, Vice President Dick Cheney swore in new and re-elected senators on day one of the 111th U.S. Congress.
Vice President-elect Joe Biden was sworn in to a seventh term as senior Senator of Delaware by Mr. Cheney. Mr. Biden will take over as Vice President on January 20th. Two seats in the 100-member Senate remained unfilled Tuesday. Senate Democrats refused to swear in Democrat Roland Burris of Illinois who was appointed by Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich to fill the seat vacated by President-elect Barack Obama. Democrat Al Franken of Minnesota also was not seated, facing legal challenges over his narrow election victory over Republican Norm Coleman.
