Business Update: Holiday freeze
Jan. 8 - Many U.S. retailers, including low-cost giant Wal-Mart, announced disappointing December same-store sales, leading many to issue profit warnings.
First-time unemployment claims fell last week, but the total number of jobless claims jumped to a 26-year high, the Labor Department announced. Mortgage rates fell in the week ended January 8, according to Freddie Mac. Conway Gittens reports from New York.
